Abstract:

The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED), Ministry of Tribal Affairs has launched the Scheme for value addition, branding & retail-marketing of Minor Forest Produces named as “Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana (PMVDY)”. The scheme is to harness the potential of forest wealth in the form of Non-Timber Forest Produce collected by tribal forest dwellers and develop entrepreneurs from tribal communities.

The NTFP-led tribal livelihood through the PMVDY scheme is a unique initiative by the Government of India for promoting indigenous communities of the country. The study is primarily focused in understand the implementation of the scheme in reaching to its targeted beneficiaries. The role of local organizations and institutions plays a pivotal part in implementing a scheme of national orientation. The study applies the DFID‟s Sustainable Livelihood Framework in understanding how the organizations and institutions are placed locally to channelize the implementation of the scheme. The study also mapped the scheme along with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its alignment to achieved the targets of SDGs.

This is a exploratory study done in the Ghotiya VDVK model centre situated in the district of Bastar in the state of Chhattisgarh. The aim was to demystify the scheme from the ground prospective and to understand the local conditions prevailing in the implementation process of PMVDY scheme. This is a part of academic understanding and testing of frameworks in the ground conditions.
