Abstract:

This paper aims to explore how does “self-help group” (SHG) play an important role in the social, cultural, political and economic aspects of women empowerment. Formation and functions of SHGs are one of the strategies to achieve women empowerment in development sector. SHG is not only for facilitation to realize collective functions and joint action but also for strengthening woman agency‟s capabilities. SHG‟s entities are community-based functions and its role is not merely savings and borrowings in economic aspect. Nowadays SHGs play new roles taking responsibilities for community development activities, political and social concerns. This research paper is a case study of existing SHGs in Taungdwingyi township in central part of Myanmar. It is an empirical study using mix-method approach.
