This study uses exploratory method to study the current challenges and opportunities of plastic waste management that exist in the city of Dehradun. Based on expert interviews, surveys and focus group discussion, the studies presents its findings of the functioning of existing systems, effect of plastic ban and upcoming technologies for plastic waste management. It finds that currently the Nagar Nigam of Dehradun is highly dependent on the private sector for waste management activities and lacks in efficient plastic management. The ban on plastic has also lost its steam since its inception in 2018 with traders and vendors using plastic bags openly. Various nongovernmental organizations in the city are bubbling with new prospects and techniques which could be integrated with the current system to increase the market value of plastic. Many new ways like EPR and plastic to fuel are under process in the city which can be studied further. The paper suggests that plastic segregation be of the highest priority. The city can also continue its ongoing initiatives of including the informal sector with collection and recycling of plastic.
Hypothesis suggested: Plastic segregation improves when market value and collection methods of plastic is improved.
