The current study aims to analyse the status of higher education and livelihoods of young women from rural Rajasthan with a particular focus on Udaipur. Rajasthan’s poor performance on various socioeconomic indicators highlights a need to study the underlying causes for the poor status of young rural women. With a special focus on Udaipur, the study maps trends in two broad areas- education and livelihoods- to identify changes in the status of women over time at the state and district level. Using the Capability Approach, it then analyses the variations at the village level, and the factors affecting them. The study concludes that advances in education and livelihoods cannot be looked in isolation. Rather they should be viewed through the lens of gender, caste and class, which play a pivotal role in defining the capabilities, and ultimately the developmental status of young women in rural areas.
