Abstract:

This major project consists of two parts; the first part is the gap assessment, GCPL’s reporting as per the standard questionnaire of RobecoSAM for three sustainability dimensions; Economic, Environmental and Social along with their sub-categories, was assessed and compared with the sustainability performance of two other companies in the same industry. Based on the assessment questions were asked, short comings were highlighted, and recommendations were given for improvement in next year’s reporting. This work was based on secondary data research from sustainability reports, annual reports, code of conduct policy, procurement policy, etc.

The second part of this major project work is part of a bigger project of conservation & re-utilization of a resource at the entire production unit of GIL, Valia. The resource referred here is good quality steam condensate and it’s utilization is in boilers for steam generation. The project was to identify the potential for recovery of condensate in Old Tank Farm and RM unloading area of GIL and to develop a scheme to recover it. This project requires understanding of the raw materials used, products (chemicals & intermediates) that production unit produces, processes, how the chemicals are stored in the tank farm and transported within the unit to various sections, study of the entire tank farm, from where steam condensate is coming out, to quantify it, and what can be best possible way to recover it within the constraints. This project is completely technical in nature and hence required detailed discussions with employees from departments; production, civil, engineering, project development and mechanical. The work also required taking physical measurements, study of engineering drawings, study of concepts of steam, piping design, pumps, and making a two-dimensional drawing of the entire scheme. The work concludes that there is substantial potential to conserve resource and it can be re-utilized.

Key words: Steam Condensate, Tank Farm, Racks, Copper Tracing, Steam Traps.
