“Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often generate a large part of the gross domestic product (GDP) and employment in developing countries. But these microenterprises are usually paid very little attention to their social and environmental performance. Ecosystem degradation and social sustainability have become important issues in the corporate sphere during the last few decades. However, research discussing corporate sustainability and related concepts have often focused on larger companies, sometimes neglecting the specifics of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The time has arrived where ignoring environmental impacts of SMEs is no longer viable. This project of developing a sustainability strategy framework for SME’s was undertaken in the guidance and mentorship of STENUM Asia. This report attempts to offer a framework for SMEs to improve their environmental performance. SMEs can set about sustainability practices by following the approach and become responsible corporates citizens. This framework will also benefit stakeholders such as governments, policy makers and citizens in mitigating and adapting to the issue of climate change.”
