Abstract: Renewable energy is increasing its share in the energy portfolios of European
and other nations of the world. As far as electricity supply is concerned solar PV
(photovoltaic) is estimated to make a major contribution in the world.
Irrespective of conventional barriers to the use of solar PV systems for
electricity generation some countries have been markedly successful in
developing their PV markets in the recent years. Countries with lower resource
potential like Germany have been successful in developing their PV sectors
through technological competence and efficient policy support from the
government. This project involves a study of the German PV sector and factors
that have influenced growth of German PV market. The government initiatives
policies have been a major cause of the German success in PV installations and
thus have been studied in detail. The goal of the project was to identify the
factors that have promoted the growth of PV market in Germany and up to some
extent an effort has been made to assess their applicability to India.
