Abstract: Environmental Impact Assessment is a tool developed for Environmental
Management to identify and assess the impacts of any development project.
Many countries raised concern about environment and introduced this tool in
their legislations since 1960’s. Yet there are a few loopholes which make this
tool inaccurate and reduced efficiency of its purpose i.e. to act as an element in
sustainable development. There are flaws with the procedures of EIA Studies
and Environmental Clearances. This study aims to bring about these flaws in
Indian EIA system, through a comparative analysis with a developed and
developing nations’ EIA procedures, as well as identifying gaps the EIA case
study conducted, supporting the gaps with the help of literature, and finally
carry out a SWOT analysis.
