The report is based on two case studies that aims to propose design interventions for Rural Road – National Highway intersection located at 2 sites – Piplai village, Rajasthan and Badipur Village, Bihar. The case studies were a component of a pilot on road safety awareness building strategy spread across 5 states along the National Highway Interconnectivity Improvement Project corridors funded by the World Bank. The case studies with core focus on Rural Road – National Highway intersection were taken up with the pretext that 37.8% of all accidents in the country have occurred at intersection in 2017 and also owing to the complex scenario faced by road users present at such site. The case studies involved traffic volume count surveys, spot speed surveys and road safety audits done on selected Rural Road, National Highway stretch and the Rural Road – National Highway Intersection. The results from the traffic studies and road safety audits were analysed to identify issues in terms of speeds prevalent at the selected stretches, type of intersection design provided, pedestrian and cyclist safety, road marking, road signage, lighting provisions, vegetation condition, cross-section and geometry from the perspective of road safety. Finally, simple and effective design measures have been proposed such as passive control measures and traffic calming measures to address the issues to large extent. This was done with the compilation of design standards and specifications laid out in Indian Road Congress Codes and international manuals and guidelines with an objective to target the issues specifically with clear design details.
