Abstract:

The mid-century Long-Term Low GHG Emissions Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) otherwise called Long-Term Strategies (LTS) are critical to put forward our increased efforts and endeavours to restrain the worldwide average temperature rise till 1.5 degree Celsius over the pre-industrial levels just as to accomplish net-zero GHG emissions in the second half of the century. The LTS will direct in what is important to adjust national climate action plans with the international climate goals. Subsequently, LTS will guide the emissions reduction pathways for a country while it looks for improvement over a more extended timeframe.

This study looked at how nations have seen these strategies to concentrate on key parts for the decrease of their GHG emissions and reviewed three long term strategies initially submitted by developed and developing nations, namely, US, France and Mexico. The study also identifies key sectors and areas of focus for a developing nation like India by using a policy modelling tool. The tool uses various policy packages in Transportation, Industry, Electricity Supply, Buildings & Appliances, and Agriculture, Land Use & Forestry sectors to depict CO2e emission trends till 2050 as well as presents the annual average abatement potential and cost effectiveness of policy groups for different policy settings.

Key words: Long-term climate strategies, LT-LEDS, LTS, India EPS Tool, Paris Agreement, CO2e emissions, CO2e abatement cost.
