Abstract: The aim of this study is to reduction of peak air-conditioning load in commercial building using thermal energy storage system. Presently India’s commercial building sectors accounts for 8.59% of electricity consumption. Building air-conditioning system consumes nearly 50% of the total electricity consumption. The building under study is IT office building located in Gurugram. Building cooling demand profile segregated in summer and winter seasons and analysed separately. TES demand shifting is greatly influenced by the factors like building load characteristics (load pattern), climate, available physical space for retrofit installation and utility rate structures (time of use tariff).

The reduction of peak air-conditioning load in commercial building is studied by doing load levelling and partial load shifting methods, considering 10000 kW-h PCM based TES system. The maximum 37% peak cooling load reduction and 21% electrical demand reduction can be achieve using TES system. Cooling demand is lower on non-peak hours (or days), partial thermal energy storage system has excess capacity that can be used during on-peak demand hours. So partial TES system will help the building owner to turning off chillers during non-peak hours. TES system will act as a back-up source for HVAC and it will eliminate back-up generators for running air-conditioning equipment’s.
