Abstract: The Interlinking of Indian Rivers Project is considered to be the largest infrastructural project to be constructed in the world. Proponents of the project have stated that it will be the solution to the problems of droughts and floods that plagues India every year. The past decades have seen the project been scrutinized by various Ministries and experts. It still remains in question because of uncertainty in proper technical knowledge and data available.

This study focuses on the issues that will arise because of the construction of the project. It has also looked into other international examples where projects of such magnitude had been undertaken and the adverse effects that have resulted due to them.

The major focus of the study is to analyze the project in the international scenario. Whether the project will be in compliance with the international law principles or not has been discussed. It ends with looking into the international obligations that India has towards Bangladesh and whether construction of the project will jeopardize India‟s relation with Bangladesh.

Keywords: Interlinking of rivers, inter-basin transfer, issues, international examples, principles of international law, obligations toward Bangladesh.
