Abstract: The study was done on understanding the solid waste management practices
followed in one of the major tourist destination of India: Agra City. Even with rich
history and home of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the current waste
management practices are far from ideal. There lies a lot of gap between the
guidelines laid down by Swachh Bharat Mission, 2018 & Municipal Solid Waste
Management Rules, 2016. The dissertation has tried its best to assess the reasons for
the gap and understanding the existing practices. Household survey, total waste
generation and newer system such as door to door collection has also been analyzed.
The author has also maintained communication with the general public throughout
the survey for understanding the lack of communication between them and officials
and also the perception of Swachh Bharat Mission in their everyday life. The paper
has suggested measures that are needed immediate action to make Agra’s ranking in
2019 Swachh Sarvekshan in top 10.
