Abstract: All around the world there are around 1 billion people residing in slums. In India
over 65 million people are inhabiting in the “slums†which are over-crowded and
often miserable for living. These are the type of informal settlements which are the
only affordable areas as the land is a primary resource in cities and the people
migrating from rural areas to urban areas find it difficult to afford expensive
areas. Places like these informal settlements often lack in availability of
infrastructure (e.g. roads and housing) and basic services (e.g. drinking water and
sanitation). In this study, a comparative analysis on the condition of slum
inhabitants among the four cities (Delhi, Agra, Ludhiana and Gangtok) was done
with respect to service level benchmarks laid down by the Ministry of Drinking
Water and Sanitation. The study further attempted to understand the interventions
done by government agency and civil society to improve the sanitation situation
in 5 slums of Delhi and analyzed changes (if any).
