Abstract: In this study, a 5HP submersible AC solar water pump from SHAKTI PUMPS has been taken
into consideration for the simulation, testing, estimation of utilization potential in India. Also,
techno-economic comparison between the solar PV pump and diesel or electric operated pump is
done on the basis of 5HP rated pumps.
Considering Delhi as the geographical site, the 5HP pump is operated at head of 50m.16 PV
module of 300 Wp are arranged in a series resulting in array global power of 4800Wp.Thus,
meeting the operational guidelines as per MNRE. The simulation results are then compared with
the testing output for one day. Although simulation gave water output of 92.5m
3
but the actual
testing results had a lower water output of 53.4m
3
.And is able to meet the minimum water
requirement of crop.
Estimation of utilization potential is done on the basis of state wise drip and sprinkler irrigation
areas covered. The approach takes into account factors such as water requirement and
availability, affordability, propensity and resource availability. It was observed that the
categories of farmer who can afford to buy the 5HP pump are small, semi-medium, medium and
large. Only the marginal could not afford the pump. The total potential number of solar
photovoltaic (SPV) pumps in India is 6.37 million out of which the potential numbers of SHAKTI
5HP pump affordable by farmer are 3 million (approx.).
In this study, economics of the SPV pumping system have been evaluated through life cycle cost
(LCC) analysis. In comparison, results yield positive net present value with rate of return of 50%
and 15% for diesel and electric pump respectively. The payback period was 2 years against
diesel engine and 6.25 years against electric pump. The annualized life cycle cost (ALCC) of the
SPV pumping system was Rs 21,539 while that of diesel and electric pump was Rs 1, 80,070 and
Rs 94,480 respectively. It has also been observed that the initial capital cost of the solar PV
pumping system is higher than diesel pump and grid connected electric pump.
