Abstract: Water is the soul of beverage industry. It is the essential ingredient in all the
products and also a requirement in all the other processes. The stringent
environmental regulations are applicable to these water-intensive industries
today and are thereby forcing these industries to adopt more efficient and
advanced treatment facilities. This study was carried out to analyse the water
consumption and usage pattern of the manufacturing plant of a beverage
industry and thereby explore the opportunities in reducing the water
consumption and recovering and recycling the wastewater to bring down the
water usage ratio.
The study was conducted at Bidadi plant of Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt
Ltd in Bangalore. The water consumption, accounting, monitoring was done
using the water mass balance approach using flow meters. This approach was
useful in identification of areas where water could be recycled, use of raw
materials and other inputs can be optimized and where closed loop systems
could be implemented, which in turn helped recommend ways to conserve water
and reduce the water usage ratio of the plant.
Further the study recommends some in-plantcontrols and areas where water
could be recycled and reused foronsite water conservation. It is also suggested
to implement this study in the other beverage manufacturing plants of HCCBPL
