Abstract: This work bases its research in District Dantewada of Chhattisgarh, India to
understand the changing pattern of tribal livelihoods with a lens of Sustainability.
The study understands the transition from one of the most critical point i.e. Indian
Forest Act, 1878 in history of Dantewada. With understanding of this historical
transition, the study uses Sustainable Livelihoods Framework of Department for
International Development for analysis of the identified cases. The criteria of
Framework have been contextualized and have been used in a non- conventional
manner of incorporating increased qualitative data in the research.
The study highlights the drastic change in the livelihood pattern has contributed to
current vulnerability context. Amidst this, it emphasizes the means by which a tribal
of Dantewada is attaining a positive livelihood outcome with a blend of different
assets while Natural capital at the centre.
