Abstract: Population of Odisha is highly dependent on water resources, received mainly
from South West Monsoon, but the impacts of climate change has been harsh on
the state creating variability in river flows and increased frequency as well as
intensity of climate extremes. Nuapada falls in the western rolling uplands, a
drought-prone area. The project is taken up to reduce the vulnerability and
enhance resilience for traditional livelihood in the district by restoring the hill-
stream, Jonk river basin through the construction of water harvesting structure
(check dams) to conserve water through run-off management. It also aims at
livelihood diversification from paddy monoculture to horticulture and fisheries.
The project aligns with NAPCC and SAPCC objectives, and the climate-proofing
of the water harvesting structures and its inter-linkages with other sectors will
have a sustainable outcome.
