Abstract: Energy Storage is likely to play an important role in ‘Grid Balancing’ with the integration of grid connected Variable Energy Resources like Wind Energy and Solar PV. Selection of appropriate Energy Storage Technology is dependent upon Location of grid connected Energy Storage and grid applications. So it is important to go for ‘Screening of Energy Storage Technology’. Further only screening of Technology without cost-benefit analysis will not reflect broader picture. So it is important to select appropriate Analytical tools capable of ‘Screening of Technology’ and carrying economic analysis as well. Taking this need into consideration ES-Select has been used for Screening of Energy Storage Technology and ESCT has been used for economic analysis of selected Energy Storage Technology. The results have been analyzed and compared. The result finds limitations of these Analytical tools in terms of category of Energy Market. Regulatory Structure and evolved Energy Market can make Energy Storage projects viable. Further to gain an insight into the Grid Balancing Strategy, comparative studies of approach to Grid Balancing of six countries – Germany, Denmark, Spain, California, China and India – have been carried out. The comparison shows that Energy Storage has yet to gain adequate place in Grid Balancing strategy.
