Abstract: Electricity, energy access and sustainable development are three of the major components for the development of a country. According to the stats released by the World Bank (2011 – 2015), the access to electricity in India is 78.7%. However, it was estimated by the Planning Commission in 2013 that around 21% of the Indian population lives below the poverty line. Census of India has estimated that poverty in the city of Hyderabad is estimated at 23% of the total population. When we talk about the below poverty line (BPL), it was reported that around 4.3 lakh people live in the MCH area, and another one lakh in the surrounding municipalities. We conducted surveys in the slums and communities to find out the amount of kerosene they use per month, along with fuel wood/dung cakes, to better understand the energy scenario and energy access to the urban poor. Through the obtained numbers, we can estimate the carbon emissions/footprint over a period of 12 months. We also came up with an elaborate idea to establish a micro entrepreneurial set up, focusing on sustainable development, and providing the slum dwellers and those in the communities with job opportunities.
