Abstract: Modelling and Simulation techniques are proven scientific methods that are being used in many sectors around the world. Transmission and Distribution is one such sector that heavily relies on Simulations. Because of the vastness and complexity of this sector, it proves to be a great boon to engineers in enhancing their design strategies, saving time and project costs. Although there are several T&D simulation models in the market today, none of them are specific to Micro-grids which caters to low voltages and short transmission lines. Village electrification projects are comparatively smaller, have different load requirements, operate at low voltages and are highly cost constraint. In order to fill the gaps, a modelling & simulation tool has been developed, that mathematically models all the components required for a Micro-grid using Simulnk/Matlab. Each component can be specifically configured and used as building blocks, whose results can significantly enhance the final performance. The entire distribution system is modelled by bare minimum input variable for easy usability, simplicity and scalability. The simulation results are used to understand the major nodes contributing to losses. They are also used in analyzing load patterns of the customer, designing protection devices and choosing the right equipment for generating Bill of Material (BOM) for maximizing power transmission. All these can be deduced from graphical evaluation of voltage, current and Power curves of the simulation. An analysis has also been made in comparing power loss, percentage units of energy saved and cost of setup between 48V DC, 220V DC and 230V AC transmission systems for a given village topology. Solution for an ideal hybrid transmission system have also been proposed. Keywords: Micro-Grids, LVDC, Simulink, Rural Electrification, Short transmission line.
