Abstract: The aim of the project is to enable sustainable development in rural sector through innovative business models. The development is envisioned in a holistic way and not restricted to energy access only. The complete work was divided into two work streams: Rural electrification and Solar water pumps in Bihar. The government is trying to connect the villages to the grid network but this is a long term process and is not sustainable. So we made an effort to identify ways in which decentralized electricity systems could be easily installed in the villages with least cost. For this a thorough survey was done on various case studies in both India and abroad and a detailed SWOT analysis was carried out. Also a suitable district in Orissa was chosen based on several key determining factors to replicate the success stories from the above case studies. Apart from business models we saw opportunity in identifying a better distribution system for mini grid models. Several proof of concepts are created which are suitable for different electricity requirements and availability of energy sources. As a second part of the solar water pump installation, a primary survey was done through a field trip to four districts in Bihar and meeting was done with various stakeholders – the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), Self Help Groups and some Entrepreneurs. Based on this survey and some secondary research a report was created for the project plan on implementing solar water pumps in Bihar. Keywords: Solar Water Pumps, Business Models, Mini Grid Models, Rural Electrification, Energy Access.
