Abstract: India’s rapidly increasing economic growth, population and urbanization are placing unprecedented pressure on demand. The stress on water resources of India is rapidly increasing at each basin level due to rising water demands and deteriorating water quality. So the country’s fragile resources are becoming stressed and scarce both in quantity and quality. The country has a great link of rivers, which are in state of crisis due over extraction, mismanagement and pollution. Moreover, since the era of industrialization water and energy have close nexus and under a water stressed situation, considering the priority allocation of water to domestic and agricultural sector over industrial water use, the industries are more prone to face water availability issue. So as a result of increasing scarcity the industrial growth is at stake. This report aims to provide a holistic and dynamic view of the water resources of India at the river basin level and tries to map the supply and demand of water in the various industrial sectors. Thus it analyses the supply and demand gap and the development of water use efficiency practices taken up by various industrial sectors in the country. It explores a number of critical issues and tries to identify gaps in addressing them.
Key Words: River Basins, Supply- Demand Gap, Water Use Efficiency, Water Quality, Thermal Power Plants
