Abstract: Floods are probably the most disastrous and frequently occurring natural hazard in the world and India is one of the worst flood affected nation. Design flood estimation is an essential for the designing of various hydraulic structures such as dams, barrages etc. Estimation of flood and flood hazard mapping are considered to be effective non structural measures for the management of flood and diminishing the associated risk involved with these disasters.
The water availability studies are essential for estimating the inflow to a river valley project. If the estimate is not appropriate, the loss of the structure may occur. 10 – Daily flow series are generated in this study for the time period of 1980 – 2008. But the data from 2000 – 08 are observed discharge data. Another aspect of the study is estimating the peak flow discharge using the basin characteristics and the hydro-meteorological approach of Synthetic Unit Hydrograph, as the short gauge rainfall data is not available. The diversion flood studies estimates the peak flood value for different return periods and decides on which one will be suitable for the diversion project of Kynshi River. The sediment rate estimation assesses if the rate is suitable according to the site conditions. And accordingly suitable measures are provided to improve sedimentation. The environmental flow assessment process assesses what amount of flow release will be suitable for the habitat residing in the river. The flood plain map delineation and velocity mapping is done using HECGeoRAS and HEC RAS. It is processed by constructing cross sections along the river and by simulating flow to procure the various hydraulic variables. A comparative analysis study can be done for different time periods using floodplain delineation.
