Abstract: Large institutions are a common sight in the urban picture and the waste generated from these are almost never managed onsite. This waste ends up in landfills completely oblivious of its impacts and missed opportunities to derive energy. There is an urgent need for solid waste management in urban institutions and this study focuses on understanding the opportunities, challenges and feasibility of installation of biogas plants across such institutions. Waste assessment along with a payback period calculation was carried out first, followed by identification of challenges which both institutions faced or will face before and after installation. The study reveals the sheer quantity of waste and untapped potential offered by the two institutions. The two institutions; Jail & Zoo have a large population of inhabitants, and differing nature of waste generated but it is imperative to understand the opportunities such institutions offer. Similarly the challenges have to be researched to better understand and create frameworks for smoothening the pre & post installation roadblocks. The study concludes with suggestions for existing practices in solid waste management and challenges faced, across the two institutions
