Abstract: This study has explored the current energy scenario in India and the role of renewable energy therein. Among the
various forms of renewable energy worldwide, rooftop solar has become popular. This research paper has analyzed
the factors that have contributed to the global growth of RTPV solar. In doing so an attempt has been made to
determine the RTPV solar potential of India, the possible obstacles in the road ahead and how to overcome them.
The potential of RTPV solar is a mix of the total solar energy (irradiation) available in India, the technology to tap
this energy and the policy/ regulatory incentives provided by the government. Developed countries like Germany
and the U.S., have consciously transitioned from heavy exploitation of fossil fuels to tapping the green/ clean energy
forms. And slowly all developing countries are also realizing the impact of conventional energy on the world
environment and climate. Thus, more and more countries are increasing their share of renewables, solar energy
being the most appreciated energy forms.
India is a sub-tropical country that receives high intensity sunlight for long duration in a day for most part of the
year. Solar Energy is expected to bloom if there is a conducive regulatory environment. Being a densely populated
nation, India has scarce land resource for large scale projects. RTPV technology holds promise through
decentralized energy generation. Especially the remote and backward areas with no electricity may benefit as laying
T&D system there is not really feasible. In urban areas where energy demand-supply gap has been on the rise, the
need for additional source of energy is imperative. In a nutshell, India is a developing nation and energy is
important for development and betterment. Exploring an alternative source of energy such as RTPV solar may
lessen if not eradicate power crisis in India.
