Abstract: Street vending and urban space management has not constituted the centerpiece of Kabul’s
officials’ urban policy. The highly modernist views of the officials for urban development
have resulted in inhospitable conditions for informal traders such as hawkers. Nonetheless,
the near absence of basic infrastructure has not de-motivated street vendors in Kabul as their
need for a living far outmatches the capacity of the government authorities to subjugate them.
Of the many challenges faced by local authorities as well as hawkers in Kabul, undoubtedly
the most pressing trail is the space management and the provision of civic facilities.
