Abstract: There has been a significant increase in MSW (municipal solid waste) generation in the
Jamshedpur City in the last few years. This is largely because of rapid population growth and
economic development in the City. Due to rapid growth of urban population, as well as
constraint in resources, the management of solid waste poses a difficult and complex problem
for the society and its improper management gravely affects the public health and degrades
environment. Although JUSCO LTD has made a good effort in waste management but it
needs more concentrated effort. So it is required to develop a holistic integrated solid waste
system for Jamshedpur City. The objective of this report is to examine the solid waste
management process in Jamshedpur, from generation to final disposal, and determine
whether method used for collection, storage, transportation, composting and landfilling is a
suitable for waste disposal for the city. Various criteria are covered, such as the
appropriateness of Jamshedpur’s MSW for primary waste collection in different residential
types, the environmental effects of storage, and sanitary landfilling process.

Waste Management System is critically analysed in detailed by that a cost effective and
efficient new Integrated SWM can be developed. For this report development series of
consultation with JUSCO personnel, reconnaissance survey of the various areas of the city,
Sampling of wastes, Secondary Data Collection, Data through JUSCO Survey (2009),
Technical Analysis and Financial analysis has been carried out.
