Abstract: Basically urbanization is a index of transformation which reflect the changes of traditional
rural economies to modern one. Urbanization is a process which is taking place for a so long
time and its result reflects as a part of economic change and social change. Urbanization is
not a new concept for India, but the rate of urbanization has decreased in past few years. The
rate of urbanization was at peak during 1940 – 1980 in India. Industrialization and
modernization are two main forces which are responsible for the urbanization in India. The
problem of urbanization in India is so large compare to all other countries in the world
because of continuous increase in population of the country. There is a clear impact of
urbanization on water, air and biodiversity. Ground water is declining day by day, surface
water runoff in increasing because of the cemented structures and concrete road through
which water cannot percolate. Quality of air and water is also degrading day by day because
of the pollution which is being done by the industries and vehicles. To minimize the impact of
urbanization government should take initiative to implement rainwater harvesting system
through which ground water can be recharged.
