Urban Sanitation Project Department of Regional Water Studies Urban Sanitation Project The project strengthens two flagship missions of the Government of India, namely National Skill Development and the Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India). These missions warrant a two-pronged approach, comprising

  • Capacity expansion of hardware and infrastructure
  • Strengthening the capacities of institutions and stakeholders to achieve the missions’ objectives.

With support from USAID, the joint initiative of TERI University, Coca-Cola India, and TERI focuses on strengthening urban water and sanitation programmes through skill development, community-based solutions, innovation, and local action and plans to achieve the objectives through many independent and inter-dependent activities.

Mentioning a few key achievement among many includes:

  • a strategy paper and a model curriculum for WASH in higher education
  • Engaged about 375 students across 18 States of India to work at the grass-roots level on WASH issues and planned appropriate solutions with stakeholder engagement at the local level
  • Two policy briefs published for policymakers
  • Access to sanitation provided to about 1000 people in urban slums of Kolkata and Chennai
  • Five innovations in the WASH sector accomplished.
