Abstract:

The rise of ESG reporting frameworks has been a beneficial outcome of the growing emphasis on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts of organisations. These frameworks facilitate the systematic, standardized, and reliable reporting of an organisation's ESG impact. They serve as guidelines that organisations can adopt to improve their reporting practices. However, the proliferation of various ESG frameworks has brought about both advantages and disadvantages. The present study centers on three widely recognized ESG reporting frameworks: GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures), and BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting). Employing a comparative analysis approach, the study examines these frameworks across various themes and sub-themes, aiming to identify and highlight both the commonalities and distinctions among them. In addition to comprehending the global landscape of ESG frameworks, the study delves into the specific context of ESG reporting in India. It examines the existing frameworks that are currently being used for ESG reporting in the country and explores any emerging frameworks that are gaining prominence. By exploring the Indian ESG reporting scenario, the study aims to provide insights into the unique aspects and developments within the Indian context. To gain a deeper understanding of ESG reporting in India, the study collected data from leading Indian companies. This data enabled the researchers to determine the extent of adoption of various ESG reporting frameworks by these companies. By comparing the adoption of different frameworks among Indian companies with global ESG reporting trends, the study aims to draw insights into the alignment of Indian practices with international standards and identify any unique patterns or variations within the Indian context. The study revealed a growth in ESG reporting in India, particularly among larger companies. It was observed that a significant number of these companies are complying with ESG reporting requirements by producing sustainability reports, Business Responsibility reports, or Corporate Sustainability Reports. This indicates a growing recognition among Indian companies of the importance of ESG considerations and the need to communicate their sustainability practices and impacts to stakeholders through formal reporting mechanisms.
