Says CS in inaugural address at management programme in EPTRI
The Government's twin initiatives, Mission Kakatiya and Mission Bhagiratha, for irrigation water management and water provisioning to households respectively, would help in achieving equity not just in gender but across caste, class and socio-economic groups, said Chief Secretary S.K. Joshi on Monday.
The CS was delivering the inaugural address at the two-day management development programme on gender equity and water management aimed at building the capacity of engineers in the department of irrigation and CAD to chalk out future directions in understanding and analysis of water inequalities at the EPTRI.
“Water scarcity is not due to non-availability of water but a question of how to harness it for equitable distribution. Even though Telangana is located in between Godavari and Krishna, the State has struggled for water in the last 70 years, he said.
There was also a need for constant capacity development among officials towards water management practices with respect to gender equity women's empowerment and women's rights in water management, said Mr. Joshi.
Rajiv Seth, pro vice chancellor of the TERI School of Advanced Studies, which will soon begin its operations here next year said that while there have been efforts in making the water sector more gender balanced and gender sensitive, critical challenges remain to be addressed.
EPTRI DG B. Kalyan Chakravarthy called for devising new models and solutions for addressing water issues which are interdisciplinary and inclusive in nature.
