Abstract: Nowadays there is a lot of urge and emphasis on Waste Heat Recovery in Industrial Sectors.
Hence, there is a push from scientific community which in this case is USAID (United States
Agency for International development ) to put forth a policy recommendation and further
leading to implementation of waste heat recovery technology development.
This edited part of policy paper consists of Waste Heat Utilisation (WHU) assessment study
for two technologies:
a) Thermo compressors
b) Vapour Absorption Machines
The various international policies of WHU in particular and Energy Efficiency in general are
discussed on comparative basis. This brings out best practices in areas of promotion ,
Education, Technology development and fiscal/monetary support on the globe as a whole in
context of EE/WHR policies. Special tax incentives/ subsidies and their method of delivery
to ESCO’s , Energy development Agencies, public commission etc. can be translated from
other countries to India.
Historical perspective of Indian EE market development , barriers and lesson
learnt while deployment of policies in India in WHU in particular / EE in general are
discussed.
The efforts in demand side management has been instrumental , say VAM Machine
bringing a reduction in running cost of AC Units. The total avoided capacity addition as a
result of these initiatives is expected to be 19,598 MW. Given that these savings will happen
on demand side , the avoided investment in generation, transmission and distribution sector
will be to the tune of Rs 1,95,980 Crores. The total CO2 emission reduction is estimated to
be 98.55 m tones as a result of these initiatives.
BEE SME scheme has been very effective in bringing down industrial
energy consumption. In order to improve the energy performance in industry , a pilot
SGA(Small group activity ) programme has been initiated by BEE. Similarly, impact of
MNRE policy interventions in Renewable Energy is analysed.
