Abstract: A transient simulation model is developed for calculating the cooling load in a small
scale cold storage under development. This model predicts the temperature of the commodity
in storage at every time step in turn associated product load, transmission heat gain, and
electrical gain using TRNSYS software. The transient product load calculation is carried out
in MS Excel tool and linked with TRNSYS platform. The product load consists of sensible
load, respiration and transpiration load. Standard Half cooling time or 7/8 cooling time
values are used in calculation. Multi zone building tool (TRNBuild) used to calculate gains
and Google SketchUp 8 tools are linked with simulation studio. Weather file of study location
is loaded and hourly simulation results are studied for cooling demand, commodity
temperature, relative humidity and respective air node temperature. Typically in a multi
commodity cold storage, the refrigeration load peak largely depends on loading pattern of
commodity. This model is aimed to assist a designer to arrive at optimum sizing and
operating parameters of refrigeration systems.
