Lighting and design analysis for GRIHA rating of regional centre, IGNOU Karnal and mapping and assessment of sustainable building rating systems in India

Abstract: Suitable Building Design is fundamental for a sustainable development. Design alone accounts for majority of the thermal and visual comfort obtained within a building and can cut down the operational cost of a building drastically. The present study dealt with the lighting design aspects of an office building located in Karnal, Haryana. The building is pitching for a three-star GRIHA Rating and is a two-storey building. The study involves carrying out a day lighting simulation using ECOTECT software and comparing the daylight obtained within the building using two glasses with different Visual Light Transmittance (VLT)s. A simple payback analysis was carried out for checking the feasibility of the considered daylighting systems. Further LPD, artificial lighting system and the energy consumption within the building have been analyzed and optimized. The next segment involves estimation of the amount of incident solar insolation over various building façades and measures have been adopted for reducing the heat gain through the building’s exterior surfaces. Subsequently, the number of windows and their dimensions has been determined. Shadow analysis has been carried out to optimize the shading requirements of the building components which can be responsible for discomfort in building. During the analysis it was found that the building was oriented at 90° with respect to north, about 35° lesser than the ideal orientation. The ideal orientation of the building was found to be 125° with respect to north, while the building is currently being oriented at 90° with respect to north. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) calculations were carried out to understand the glazing properties, type of windows and the shading devices used. The SHGC helps in comprehending the effectiveness of a fenestration system. To investigate the distribution pattern of the fenestrations on the various building façades, Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR) has been calculated for the entire building.

The various sustainable building rating systems are available in India to build capacities and knowledge of builders, architects, engineers, labs, institutions and others in the area of building energy efficiency by following a multistakeholders cooperation process. Therefore, a survey has been carried out to find out experiences of experts and users with these rating systems along with a quantitative analysis of the sustainable building rating systems in India. The survey has been carried out with the aim to utilize the Swiss experience and expertise on Building Energy Efficiency in upcoming building stock in India. The conclusions drawn from the study would be utilized in adapting MINERGIE® in India. MINERGIE® , developed in Switzerland, is a sustainable building label focusing solely on the energy consumption of a building. The label is difficult to adapt in India since the energy standards of the label are set according to the requirements in cold countries where energy is basically needed to meet the heating requirements which do not exist in a country like India.
