Abstract: Industrialisation and urbanisation has given rise to the production of wide
variety of industrial and consumer products, by products and wastes. The textile
industry is one of the oldest sectors in the world; this industry involves
processing or converting raw materials into finished cloth employing various
operations. But the effluent discharged from textile industry is one of the most
dangerous threats to the environment. This threat is rising more and more by
increasing human population and modernisation. There are different treatment
technologies in different countries for treatment of textile effluent. This study
with an aim to understand various treatment technologies used in various parts
of the world and then compare them with India has taken few selected the best
case studies from the countries like USA, Germany. This study was done to
understand the situation of India in terms of technology used for effluent
treatment of textile industry. The study presents detailed case study with analysis
of important parameters like performance efficiency, sludge management etc.
Based on the assessments, Germany clearly emerged as the user of best
techniques, then United States, but analysis also shows that India is not very far
behind. To understand the poor performance of effluent treatment plants in
India, field visit and interview conducted during the study which suggested that
poor operation and maintenance is the root causeof under performance of the
system and not technology.
