Abstract:

This thesis delves into the critical assessment of climate-related risks faced by the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, with a specific focus on plantation estates. The study identifies substantial challenges stemming from both physical and transitional risks, including extreme weather events, regulatory shifts towards sustainability, and evolving consumer demands. Through a systematic methodology, the research employs comprehensive data collection, stakeholder engagement, risk matrix construction, and scenario analysis to evaluate the potential impacts of climate change on plantation assets.

The assessment highlights significant vulnerabilities, particularly in regions like Periaaakanal and Pullivaaasal Estates, where heightened risks of extreme weather events and decreased productivity pose immediate concerns. Low and high emission scenarios underscore the necessity for proactive adaptation measures and collaborative efforts to bolster resilience and sustainability in the face of evolving climatic conditions. The findings emphasize the critical importance of integrating climate risk considerations into strategic planning and investment decisions within the plantation sector, advocating for multi-stakeholder collaborations and innovative solutions to mitigate adverse impacts and ensure long-term prosperity.

This research underscores the imperative for proactive action and a steadfast commitment to sustainability to navigate the complexities of climate change and secure a resilient future for the FMCG sector, particularly within operational and plantation estates.
