This study examines the multifaceted impact of sugarcane production on its producers in Uttar Pradesh, India. Recognizing Uttar Pradesh as the largest sugarcane-producing state, the research employs a mixed-methods approach to assess how sugarcane cultivation influences the socio-economic and environmental well-being of local communities. The study is structured to explore economic benefits, such as income and employment opportunities, alongside socio-cultural changes and environmental consequences resulting from extensive sugarcane farming. Through comprehensive data collection, including structured surveys and semi-structured interviews with 150 households in Bhainsi village, the research identifies key factors influencing life satisfaction among sugarcane producers. The Life Satisfaction Index, developed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), serves as a crucial measure, revealing significant predictors like landholding size, crop yield, and access to irrigation. Key findings include that 80% of sugarcane producers practice traditional cultivation methods, while 20% have adopted modern techniques. The average annual income from sugarcane cultivation contributing to 70% of the total household income. The Life Satisfaction Index scores ranged from 1 to 100, with a mean of 65. Regression analysis indicated that larger landholdings, higher crop yields, and income from sugarcane cultivation were significant predictors of life satisfaction (p < 0.05). Additionally, 60% of participants reported satisfaction with water availability, while 40% faced challenges due to water scarcity. The thematic analysis highlighted economic dependence on sugarcane farming (70%) and concerns about environmental sustainability (50%). This research provides valuable insights for policymakers to foster sustainable and inclusive agricultural practices, prioritizing the welfare of local communities in Uttar Pradesh.
