Abstract:

Water Resources have been a focal point since time immemorial, as the human civilization has always settled near the water bodies. Over the last five thousand years, human society has evolved under various leaderships, however the common thread that has been constant in all these is how these various civilizations have utilized and managed water resources for the society at large. Eventually the need to manage the waste water also began playing a very prominent role. One of the recent developments is understanding the importance of green infrastructure that basically is sustainable management of resources where the natural or semi natural systems provide services for water resources management with equivalent or similar benefits to conventional (built) "grey" infrastructure. In India, there are massive strides required to successfully incorporate green- blue infrastructure and presently it is limited to lakes, floodplains etc. Given the diversity of India, a “one-size-fits-all” approach is impractical hence the initiatives under the sustainable development goals 2030, seems like a more achievable target in the long run. Since water is directly or indirectly related to almost all public policies there is need for more careful consideration and hence India has undertaken various flagship programmes and schemes which the author will discuss in the dissertation.
