Abstract:

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of the SIDS country where, only 13 % of their population have access to electricity, remaining 87% are still without power due to geographical constraints.PNG’s National Energy Policy, aims to achieve 70% electrification in Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 2030 and 100% by 2050 has been set by the Government of PNG. The purpose of this study is to perform resource assessment to identify the potential of the resources available at PNG and provide clean energy access to the rural areas where the power isn’t reliable and quality of grid power isn’t good, focussing on northern province of PNG (East and West Sepik region).Analysis of electricity scenario is done on basis of literature review and stakeholder consultation through a detailed questionnaire to develop understanding of their electricity grid with their generation, demand assessment, power supply scenario, challenges and barriers associated in installing a system. Renewable energy sources majorly solar along with battery storage has been considered taking social and economic reasons. HOMER pro software has been used for optimisation to get a feasible solution with appropriate optimal energy mix; considering the load profile and estimated load for five locations in the West Sepik region.
