Air pollution is one of the major health hazards that have been faced world-wide. As an instantaneous and effective solution to reduce exposure air filters is a constant realm of research. Research in this field is wide-ranged and has been reported in various scholarly articles. Here, we try to review some of the recent studies that have developed new and efficient filter material. A literature review has been carried out to look for recent advancement in the field of research. The results indicate that Particulate Matter (PM) is mostly targeted pollutant followed by Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and further by Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX). In all the categories the maximum number of papers, the proposed filter efficiency lies in above 99% efficiency. Petroleum/carbon based derivatives are highly used as the base constituent material while electro-spinning is the most opted technique for fabrication of filter. In 63% of the papers one or more than one attribute related to sustainability has been inculcated. Reusability is one of the highest reported sustainability related attribute with the maximum percentage of 37. Apart from this a schematic has been also developed showing the relationship of various attributes linked to the all the three facets of sustainability. Sercin-Coated polyester (nylon) sheet reported in (Verma et al., 2019) and Polysulphone (PSU)/polyurethane (PU) Nano fibre reported in (Chen et al., 2018) both possess high gas adsorption capacity and good PM capture ability are the most suitable options along with different catalysts that can degrade the captured pollutant simultaneously, should be considered for further up-scaling.
