Return migration is a significant phenomenon. In the context of development of social sector and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in India, highly skilled returnees have a vital role to play. The thesis focus on examining various ways through which the skilled returnees can contribute in development of India, by placing special focus on the transfer of knowledge and skills in the form of human capital, enabling the transnational networking in the form of social capital and transfer of the remittances and accumulated capital in the form financial capital. Besides acquiring the skillset and gaining the knowledge, overseas exposure of the returnees has an important implication on their organizations. The overseas exposure and flow of new ideas and norms act as a crucial component of these returnees, who act a change maker in the developing societies like India. Further, the findingsalso offer considerable evidence to show that there are certain factors associated with the social and economic aspects of the country of destination andorigin, which act as a “push” and “pull” in contemporary migratory patterns and guides the individual‟s decision of returning to their home country. The thesis concludes with the argument that strengthening of the reintegration process of the returnees, can help them in avoiding the bottlenecks faced by them in the early phases of their professional life, and thus maximum benefits of the “Brain Gain” can be extracted. Return migration can become an imperativepedal for development, if the knowledge, skills and proficiency gained by them in abroad, is assisted with the suitable institutional infrastructure.
