Abstract: The world’s food production is at risk due to intensifying consequences of climate
change, yet major portion of greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation comes from
activities of food and beverage companies. One of the important challenges faced by
humans today is attaining balance between food and beverage sector’s productions and
emissions with methods that will maintain ecological balance and does not hinder the
livelihood of future generation. The need for production and processing of food and
beverages was felt after a sudden increase in the world population in last several
centuries and since then it has been a major concern. Apart from greenhouse gas
emissions, environmental concerns related to food and beverage production which
require attention include land use change, reduction in biodiversity, climate change,
water shortages among others. Companies are increasingly becoming conscious of their
emissions and are getting greenhouse gas emissions accounting done for their part of
emissions to the environment. The study highlights emissions from one such food and
beverage company and gives suggestive measures for sustainable production. Direct
emissions from company owned and controlled resources are scope 1 emissions,
indirect emissions which are generated from purchased energy consumed by the
company are scope 2 and all other indirect emissions that occurs in company’s value
chain i.e. scope 3 emissions are accounted in the report. The study is conducted within a
defined boundary and for the purpose of calculating and reporting GHG emissions, two
standards viz. Greenhouse Gas Protocol on Corporate Accounting and Reporting by
World Resource Institute (WRI) / World Business Council for Sustainable Development
(WBCSD) and ISO 14064-1:2006 are used.
