Abstract: The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) originates from the vision of the Government articulated in the speech of The President of India in his address to the Joint Session of Parliament on 9th June 2014 followed by the address of the Prime Minister of India on 2nd October 2014.The SBM is being executed by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) and by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MoDWS) for urban and rural areas respectively. The study area for this internship is Faridabad which is divided into three administrative divisions: the old municipal town of Faridabad, Ballabgarh, and the New Industrial Town (NIT) along with 38 revenue villages , all divided further into 35 wards and are governed by the Municipal Corporation, Faridabad.
The Swachh Survekshan results indicate 92% of the citizens in Faridabad that were surveyed have individual toilets in their house. For achieving an Open Defecation Free city (ODF) status, the figures of Census 2011 are considered as the baseline. Construction of Community Toilets and Public Toilets in the open defecation spots would be a step forward towards an ODF City. The City of Faridabad consists of 46,931 households that do not have proper sanitation facilities. These households need to be informed about the support being offered by the central and state government for constructing toilets in their houses. There may be households that would not be eligible or due to limited space available with them for individual toilet construction. In such scenario community toilets would be proposed for a set of households. Solid Waste Management carries 40 percent share in the Swachh Survekshan. Faridabad does not have a waste treatment facility at present and door to door collection is being done by NGOs and Private operators. The City Support Units that have been set up at the Municipal Corporation Level are mandated to enhance the capacity of the Municipal Officials and providing Advisory support to the Municipal Commissioner. It is expected that by the end of the engagement, the city performs well in the next round of Swachh Survekshan by achieving the Mission targets set forth. The Swachh City Plan and Assessment of Existing Processes would be instrumental in converging towards an open defecation free city, with modern and scientific waste collection and disposal systems in place.
