Abstract: “Swachhta Leads to Prosperity†or “Sanitation is more important than
political freedom†are some of the simple great thoughts of our eminent leader
Mahatma Gandhi, whose 145th birth anniversary was celebrated with a pledge to
achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) India by his 150th anniversary in 2019.
The paramount mission named Swachh Bharat Abhiyan/Mission or Clean India
Mission was initiated to provide Individual & community toilets to the people of
India & imbibe in them the practice of using toilets through regular Information,
Education & Communication (IEC) activities by NGOs, Sanitation workers,
Gram Panchayats etc.
The mission comprising the two main components SBM-Urban & SBM-Gramin
has a separate budget for each, with a total of Rs1.96 lakh crore to carry the
mission over the next five years. The mission apart from providing toilets aims
to eradicate manual scavenging & proposes to use of modern & scientific waste
disposal activities. It encourages using cost-effective & appropriate technologies
for ecologically safe & sustainable sanitation.
To fulfill these objectives & be a part of prestigious mission this project activity
proposes to use “Biomethanation Technology or the Night-soil based Biogas
plant†to treat the toilet waste & organic waste in the same plant which
ultimately pose less burden on land & controls the GHG emission caused due to
unscientific waste disposal. This proves to be both, technically & financially
feasible model by using a proven & correctly designed biogas plant along with
incentive from carbon credits & government’s share for solid waste
management activities.
