India Green University Network

About

Youth (15-24 years) in India constitutes one-fifth (19.1%) of India's total population (Census 2011). As per MHRD (Ministry of Human Resources and Development) statistics, 2019, India has 993 Universities, 39931 colleges and 10725 stand-alone institutions. Approximately, 37.4 million youth are presently enrolled in higher education programs in India. To mainstream environmental education and to build skills and capacities of India’s youth, UNEP with the support from the TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) proposes to establish India Green University Network (IGUN). We believe that education is fundamental to achieving the SDGs and Universities/Higher Education Institutes have a critical role to play in preparing future generations to participate responsibly in building a sustainable and inclusive green economy with healthy and productive ecosystem.

Mission:

Convene, Communicate, Collaborate, Catalyze, Commit

Objectives:

• To provide a common and easily accessible platform to collaborate, network, synergize, form partnerships and execute ideas.
• To create a strong supply of necessary green and environmental sustainability skills through education and action-oriented efforts.
• To document and build on the existing efforts being undertaken by HEIs and other stakeholders.
• To establish a standardized Green Campus guideline/framework for India.
• To promote and celebrate innovation.
• To extend beyond institutional boundaries, thereby catalyzing more sustainable communities.

For whom?

Institutions/organizations/regulatory bodies/universities/college campuses that:

Have ideas in place and are looking to seek guidance for execution
Are not yet practicing anything but are looking for inspiration
Want to share their practices with others and encourage them to act

Are looking to collaborate and partner with other Universities

Are acting and want to help others to go green

Aiming to collaborate with other stakeholders to brainstorm new ideas and innovate

Are clueless of where to begin and want to be aware of what’s going on before they kick start

Are already undertaking/promoting/supporting environment and sustainability related initiatives

*Essentially, IGUN is for any and every HEI and the linked stakeholders who want to collaborate and synergize with others in order to integrate environmental sustainability into their campus, despite their current status of practicing sustainability.

Stakeholder Dialogue

About US

Higher education institutions (HEIs) and in collaboration of other stakeholders have been working together for greening of campuses and curriculum across India. Despite all these efforts there is a lack of following a ‘Whole Institutional Approach’ or ‘System redesign’ when it comes to inclusion of environment and sustainability within the HEIs. Institutions/organizations selectively focus either on introducing new courses on environment and sustainability or setting up environmental management systems (Greening) or promoting advocacy/innovation. In the absence of a synergistic approach among the HEIs and the other stakeholders, it is difficult to assess or even piece together the impact of the efforts at a Pan India level with regard to inclusion of environment and sustainability in HEI. Moreover, there is no study or reports on the extent of work that has been done.

As a first step for establishing the IGUN, UNEP and TERI SAS are organizing a stakeholders’ dialogue on Friday, 17 Sep 2021 at 4:00 PM India Standard Time (convert to your local time zone) to document what’s already happening, where are the gaps and how can stakeholders collaborate to leverage on each other’s strengths. Stakeholders from the regulatory bodies, implementing agencies, funding organizations, foundations, universities, and college campuses are being invited to the Stakeholders’ Dialogue.

The Dialogue will provide a platform to various stakeholders to discuss plausible solutions and build a long-lasting alliance. In addition, it will provide a great opportunity for us to collate the good work that has been done with Higher educational establishments in India and share it with other similar networks globally.
