Advancing Natural Climate Solutions in India: The Knowledge and Training Programme

Supported By: The Nature Conservancy

Emerson Centre of Excellence for Sustainability Studies, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), is driving the adoption of Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) to tackle critical environmental challenges in India. With climate change vulnerability and land degradation threatening both ecosystems and communities, NCS provides a nature-based approach that enhances climate resilience while harmonizing ecological conservation with sustainable development.

What Are Natural Climate Solutions?

Natural Climate Solutions leverage nature’s intrinsic processes—such as afforestation, soil conservation, and ecosystem restoration—to sequester carbon, support biodiversity, and sustain essential ecosystem services. These solutions integrate climate action with natural resource protection, fostering sustainable livelihoods and strengthening community resilience.

Programme Goals and Initiatives

The Knowledge and Training Programme is dedicated to building awareness and capacity among policymakers, researchers, and environmental practitioners on NCS principles. By merging scientific insights with practical implementation, the programme promotes sustainable forest management and climate-smart development, ensuring a balanced approach to environmental and socio-economic well-being.

State-Level Engagement and Collaboration

To drive meaningful impact, the programme has facilitated roundtable discussions across 16 states, including Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. These discussions bring together key stakeholders—ranging from district-level officers to senior officials—to address region-specific environmental challenges, share best practices, and foster collaboration. By engaging state forest departments and other decision-makers, the programme ensures that NCS initiatives are locally tailored and effectively implemented.

Through this comprehensive and action-oriented approach, the Knowledge and Training Programme aims to catalyze sustainable practices that enhance India's ecosystems and communities, paving the way for a resilient and thriving future.
